For northerly Scottish towns, Thurso and Scrabster have excellent road access. The main A9 runs all the way from Perth (north of Edinburgh), through Inverness and directly into Thurso and then Scrabster. For those flying to Wick Airport in Caithness, the A882 connects with the A9 to the south of Thurso.

You can hire cars in Thurso town or be met at Scrabster port by a hire car company representative. Cars can be had on demand, but it is best to book online ahead of time so as to avoid disappointment, particularly during the peak summer season.
